Rugrats: Angelica

Angelica is one of those characters everyone either hates or just loves to hate. As mean and spoiled rotten as she is, we gotta be grateful for all of the funny, crazy, and otherwise over the top moments she’d given us throughout the series.

Angelica's Worst Nightmare

If you and your friends grew up in the 90s like I did, you’ve probably seen this meme at least once.

This episode revolves around the possibility of Angelica becoming an older sister.

It starts with her mom Charlotte excitedly showing Drew a test tube “it turned blue!”

...ok, when I was a kid, I never understood what that had to do with anything. By the time I was old enough to see commercials for at-home tests, they used the + and - system (or for those who don’t know how to read directions because they’re so inconsistent from kit to kit, it flat out says “pregnant” or “not pregnant”). So I can only assume the blue test was the original version of this.

Anyway, Angelica isn’t happy about this predicament because she doesn’t want to share the attention. She goes so far as to call a TV hotline for advice, only to hang up on the guy when he tells her she needs to learn to share.

The meme comes from a nightmare sequence where the baby threatens to hurt her and her parents treat her like Cinderalla and make her live in the laundry room. Then her brother chases her out of the house, grows giant and eats her before she wakes up.

In the end, Angelica never becomes an older sibling, which she’s thrilled about of course. But revisiting this as an adult... I just assumed that the test was a false positive but there is a possibility that it wasn’t. Considering how much Angelica is spoiled, maybe her parents had issues with fertility and they’re overzealous because they’re grateful to have her.
Or they just misread the test completely...

Makes you think...

Pickles vs Pickles

You know how when you’re a kid, you don’t like to eat your vegetables? This episode is basically the nightmare scenario of that predicament.

Angelica throws a tantrum (even by her standards, it’s a really bad one) over broccoli at the dinner table and is sent to her room. Drew proceeds to completely overthink her threat of “you’ll be sorry” and dreams that she sues them... over child abuse, I guess?

But yeah, she contacts a TV lawyer, records all of her conversations with her parents to use against them, and does an emotional tv news spot. Saying stuff "I'm not a bad kid... I just want a little ice cream, maybe a toy here and there... and now they're making out to be the bad guy? When will it end?"

The court room scene has all kinds of shenangians- like Angelica firing her lawyer and representing herself, interviewing her stuffed animals as witnesses. To cap it all off, she asks Drew what she wanted for her birthday (a large train she could ride around) and makes him look bad because he didn't get it for her. ("But they were sold out!")
The judge finds him in contempt, gives Angelica everything she asks for and he ultimately wakes up.

He has a heart-to-heart with her at the end where they both apologize and he says she’ll eat new food whenever she’s ready to try it.

...I actually remembered this as I was writing this: after he leaves, she takes out a list of crossed out food items and crosses off broccoli and she comments “works every time.”

Ok, that’s criminal mastermind stuff right there- holy crap!

It's also kinda funny to read the Wiki and how it lists all of the reasons why this case wouldn't hold up in reality. How Angelica couldn't get any of her parents' assets until she's 18 and she'd be passed off to Stu and Didi until then... yeah, after watching a LOT of Judge Judy over the past 7 years, I kinda get that none of this makes sense. But it's a kids' show- it really isn't supposed to.

Angelica breaks a leg

Oh boy- so many talking points with this one.

Angelica is staying with Tommy while her parents go on a company rafting trip. She’s bent out of shape because nobody wants to play with her. At some point, she catches a soap opera where a girl laid up with a broken leg and her boyfriend is at his beck and call.

Sooo... she fakes a broken leg and actually pulls off the perfect scam. Granted, she had a bit of help.

I never saw Doogie Howser (the show that introduced one generation to Neil Patrick Harris... the next has Harold & Kumar go to White Castle to thank for that)... the Pickles see a doctor undoubtedly inspired by him (Hoagie Dowser... they weren't even trying to hide that!), but... OMG, what an idiot!
He keeps referring to the Pickles as “Peaches” despite several attempts at correcting him. Because of this, he shows them the wrong X-ray.
What the hell, man!

Also, they can’t get in contact with her parents because “I’ve been trying to reach Charlotte, but her phone is always busy,”

Gee... I wonder why! Even on a white water rafting excursion, that stupid phone is attached to her hand.
Sadly, we all know at least one person in our lives who’s that breed of workaholic.

The most infamous scene that everyone remembers: Angelica asks for chocolate pudding at 3 in the morning. Stu goes out and gets pudding mix (couldn't find the ready-made stuff)... and we have this:

By the time he gets it to her, she waves him away, "That's ok, Uncle Stu. I'm not hungry anymore."
...

Hahahahahahahahahaha!!!

Omg- even before the Internet, I quoted that last part all the time.

And it’s not just the look on his face and the scream that follows... but that huge dramatic pause before the gasket blows- that’s the kind of comedic timing I LOVE.

Finally the doctor calls and claims “there was a mixup with the X-rays” and he apologizes to a football player (Antonio Peaches) with a leg bent at an unnatural angle.

Ahhhh!!! Moron!

You didn’t mix up the X-rays- you mixed up their names! Dumbass...

(Sorry, I just couldn’t keep it G rated for this one)

It’s kinda funny how Stu just breaks down after hearing this news (“I’ve never been so happy”)... but I don’t find it funny that Angelica completely gets away without being punished.

Although having to wait on her mom (who actually broke her leg on the trip but is still on her phone) might be punishment enough.

These last two are from later on, but still have their moments.

Angelica Orders Out

Stu’s latest invention is a device that changes your voice when you speak into it. Angelica tried it out and they’re shocked to discover it makes her voice sound like her mom. It’s placed out of her reach, but clearly not high enough...
Another thing that happens- Grandpa is in charge of babysitting but Didi threatens to take his teeth away if he falls asleep on the job or allows them to have junk food.
...not to say that hasn’t happened, but isn’t that technically elder abuse?

Angelica goes absolutely wild with her new “super power”. She starts with ordering everything from a home delivery food place and has her dad get her a shiny new toy. Then she goes big by throwing herself a surprise birthday party and inviting all of the adults.

Her bubble is busted pretty spectacularly and she’s forced to devour the one dessert she doesn’t like. "How was I supposed to know flan was so yucky?"
(First time I've ever heard of flan and as of yet, I haven't tried it. Not sure if I want to, judging from her reaction :P )

The Word of the Day

Angelica is chosen to audition for her favorite TV show, which has a different “happy helper” every month. She pretty much nails her audition with the show's director, but overhears what she believes to be the real new fun phrase from a disgruntled Miss Carol in her dressing room.
There’s a running joke where she repeats it and a random loud sound keeps us from hearing what it is.

Finally, she does it on the actual show on live TV. Miss Carol threatens to throw her off the set. But when Angelica challenges her (“that’s what you said!”), Miss Carol snaps and repeats it.

We see the astonished expressions of the people in the control booth as they elicit a technical difficulties screen.

After the chaos gets a chance to sink in (another GREAT dramatic pause), Angelica points excitedly. “See! See! She did say it!”

Haha!! I’m sorry, I love that part. I still say it from time to time.

We never find out what that bad word is. Angelica just says how her parents told her it makes other people feel bad.

And Miss Carol is fired and the director takes over her hosting duties. After dealing with Miss Carol's ire all these years, she definitely deserved it.
